Chengdu is the pace-changer: after Beijing and Xi'an's intensity, its teahouses and leafy lanes feel like another country. Most visitors come for pandas and stay for the food. Plan 2–4 nights, plus a day for the Buddha or the mountains.
Decide the city's role
A good fit if you want pandas, real Sichuan cooking, and evenings that don't require a plan. Think twice if you expect monument-dense sightseeing — Chengdu's charm is atmosphere, not checklist items.
Build days by cluster
| Cluster | What's in it | Why it groups |
|---|---|---|
| Pandas | Chengdu Research Base (go at opening) | Half-day; pandas are active before 10:00 |
| Old Chengdu | Kuanzhai Alley, People's Park teahouse, Wuhou Temple | One walkable afternoon |
| Food | Jinli night market, hotpot, mapo tofu pilgrimages | Evenings, by district |
| Day trips | Leshan Giant Buddha or Dujiangyan + Mount Qingcheng | Full-day each, bus or train |
Booking priorities
Panda Base tickets are timed and date-specific — book the earliest slot and arrive before 08:30 for feeding hours. Leshan boats run first-come in the morning. Everything else is walk-up friendly, which is exactly the point of Chengdu.
