The Chengdu day is the easiest to love and the easiest to ruin: ruin comes from sleeping in. Pandas are morning animals — the base is magical before 10:00 and a queue-fest after. The rest of the day is deliberately slow, because that is the local grammar.
The day, hour by hour
| Time | Stop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 07:30 | Metro / taxi to the Panda Research Base | Timed, date-specific ticket; earliest slot wins |
| 08:30–10:30 | Feeding hours, walk the loop top-down | Start at the highest enclosure, follow the bamboo down |
| 11:00 | Back toward the center, early lunch | Sichuan home-cooking street, not the hotel strip |
| 13:30 | People's Park teahouse | Bamboo chairs, tea refills, ear-cleaning if you dare |
| 15:30 | Kuanzhai Alley or Wuhou Temple + Jinli | Pick one; they are the same idea twice |
| 19:00 | Hotpot (mild option exists) or mapo tofu | Book nothing; queue with the locals, it moves |
Trade-offs
You skip Leshan's Giant Buddha and Dujiangyan — both are full-day commitments and belong to a second day, not a squeezed afternoon. The panda base and the mountains do not fit in one daylight window.
Where it breaks
Peak-season panda tickets sell out days ahead — this is the one booking that must happen before you arrive. Rain does not bother the pandas (they like it), but it does empty the teahouses. And heat after 11:00 sends the bears indoors; another reason mornings win.
