This is the one day every Beijing first-timer should copy: the north–south imperial axis, done in the right order, ending in the hutongs. The trick is direction — enter the Forbidden City from the south, exit north, and let the day roll downhill.
The day, hour by hour
| Time | Stop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 07:30 | Tiananmen Square | Security check opens early; allow 20–30 min |
| 08:30 | Forbidden City (south entry) | Timed ticket, book days ahead; passport is the ticket |
| 12:00 | Exit north gate → lunch near Jingshan | Simple noodle shops beat the tourist strip |
| 13:30 | Jingshan Park climb | 20 minutes up for the full-roof-gaze panorama |
| 15:00 | Beihai Park or White Dagoba | Optional breather by the lake |
| 17:00 | Nanluoguxiang → Shichahai lakes | Hutong lanes into a lakeside dinner |
Trade-offs
You skip the Temple of Heaven and the museums — they belong to a second day. Do not squeeze both into this one; the Forbidden City alone absorbs three hours if you let it.
Where it breaks
Rain (no shelter in the courtyards), national holidays (book weeks ahead, expect walls of people), and skipping the advance ticket — walk-up entry is not a thing anymore.
