Hangzhou Day Route: West Lake and Tea Fields

Lake causeways at dawn, a tea-village lunch, and Song-dynasty streets after the crowds thin.

The classical-China day: one lake, one village, one old street - paced so the crowds stay behind you.

The Day

Time Move Notes
07:00 Bai Causeway walk Locals' hour - mist on the water, herons, empty paths. Enter from the northeast gate.
09:00 Broken Bridge + lakeside coffee The "bridge" is neither broken nor a bridge - enjoy the nameboard anyway.
10:30 Bus/taxi to Longjing tea village 30 minutes. Walk the terraces behind the village, free and green.
12:30 Lunch in the village Longjing shrimp and braised bamboo - plus the pressed tofu every family serves.
14:00 Tea tasting at a grower's house Politely decline the hard sell; buy only what you tasted.
16:00 Hefang Street + Southern Song street Touristy but real craft shops hide inside: scissors (Zhang Xiaoquan), silk, fans.
18:30 Grand Canal night walk Gongchen Bridge area - lanterns, fewer tourists, good dinner streets.
Trade-off matrix

Every route is a set of trades — this one, made visible

Keep
The 07:00 causeway hour
Longjing village + tasting
Canal at dusk
Cut instead
Sleeping in - the lake at noon is a different, worse place
Leifeng Pagoda (queue-heavy, view is from outside anyway)
Boat rides on the lake (same water, no shade, long queues)

Click a row to isolate one trade; switch sides to read what you would give up on its own.

Where it breaks

Rain: the lake gets better, the tea terraces get slippery - bring shoes that grip. National holidays invalidate this entire plan; the causeways at golden week are shoulder-to-shoulder by 09:00. If your dates are fixed to a holiday, swap the lake for the Xixi wetlands, which absorb crowds better.
