This is the day that explains Shanghai in one line: morning in the 1500s, afternoon in the 1930s, evening in the 2090s. Old town gardens, Deco streets, then a waterfront facing the future. The order matters — gardens first, before the tour groups.
The day, hour by hour
| Time | Stop | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | Yu Garden (opens 09:00, queue from 08:30) | Buy timed entry; the bazaar next door wakes up late |
| 11:00 | City God Temple area → xiaolongbao lunch | The classic soup-dumpling houses queue by 12:00 |
| 13:00 | Metro to the former French Concession | Wukang Road and the plane-tree lanes |
| 15:00 | Fuxing Park coffee walk | Deco facades, tai chi in the park |
| 17:30 | Metro or taxi to the Bund | Arrive before the light dies |
| 18:30–20:30 | Bund at dusk, ferry to Pudong and back | The ferry, not the cruise — same view, 2 CNY |
Trade-offs
You skip Pudong's observation decks — the view from the Bund is the deck, for free. If a tower matters to you, swap the Concession afternoon for the Shanghai Tower at sunset.
Where it breaks
Rain flattens the whole plan (the garden becomes a queue under umbrellas). Monday closings hit the garden shops, not the streets. And never end the night on Nanjing Road's tourist strip — walk five minutes off it.
